CMBlu – the organic flow battery company

We make large-scale energy storage solutions for the renewable energy transition.

We pioneered the organic flow battery

At CMBlu our approach is simple. We look to nature to make technology better. By imitating carbon-based molecules from the citric acid cycle in our bodies, we developed high-performance energy storage molecules that are entirely organic. The result is simply revolutionary: a green battery that enables large-scale, affordable, and customizable energy storage.

CMBlu started as a research-driven project in 2011. Since then, we have continued to expand our broad IP portfolio and energy storage expertise. Today, we are one of the leading organic flow battery companies and a major German battery manufacturer located in Alzenau, Germany. And we’re set to power the energy revolution – together with our partners, our customers and our staff.

CMBlu milestones

  • 2011

In 2011 a small team headed by founder Dr. Peter Geigle starts investigating organic flow technology.

  • 2013

We develop the first multi-cell stack design, one of the early cornerstones of our scalable green batteries.

  • 2014

Promising research results lead to the founding of CMBlu Energy AG in 2014. Major partnerships are established and a strategic focus is put in place.

  • 2015

We premiere the first lignin-based fully organic battery, making the electrolytes especially economical to source and safe to use.

  • 2016

We succeed in building the first large-scale stack – a big step for the bulk energy storage for multiple applications.

  • 2018

The first high-performance PEP electrolyte joins our growing IP portfolio which we have been honing since 2011.

  • 2019

Our company’s headcount increases to 80 employees.

  • 2020

Our green battery solutions continue to grow, with our CMBlu Stack Version 2.0, a commercial-scale battery with up to 100 cells.

  • 2021

And grow: we launch the first system with 6x100 cells, BMS and power electronics, for even larger applications and precise performance monitoring.

  • 2021+

The success story continues. Strong growth, new and exciting applications and other developments are on the horizon for CMBlu.
